WHY USE MINDFULNESS MATTER?
Because it works!
Although grasping the concept of mindfulness is simple, it can be difficult to practice and achieve.​​​​​​

Many people find it hard to stop all the automatic and intrusive thoughts that pop into their head when first learning to be mindful.

Mindfulness Matter serves as a tool that will help you achieve the focus needed to learn to be mindful and reap the benefits of living a mindful life.

A BRIEF HISTORY ON MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is not a new concept; it has been practiced for thousands of years primarily in Eastern regions of the world.

It became popularized in the United States in the late 1970’s by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a professor at the University of Massachusetts, who studied the benefits of mindfulness in reducing stress. Having realized the potential, Kabat-Zinn developed a Westernized stress-reduction program centered on the basic principles of other mindfulness practices such as Zen, yoga, and meditation.

Dr. Kabat-Zinn found great success and Since his RE-introduction thousands of studies have been conducted supporting the effectiveness of mindfulness practice.

A BRIEF ON THE LATEST RESEARCH

RECENT Harvard StudIES

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Research has now well-demonstrated that mindfulness practices Produce reductions and remission of symptoms in areas such as chronic .pain, depression, anxiety, aND stress.​​

​Most recently, in 2019, researchers at Harvard Medical and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) teamed up to demonstrate the physical and mental benefits gained from mindfulness practices. What they discovered through neuroimaging (fMRI) is that positive changes of brain activation take place in the amygdala (the emotion center) region of the brain. Moreover, they found that the positive neural changes of brain activity they found took place both while practicing mindfulness and remained changed even when the subjects were no longer engaging in mindfulness activity. truly A ground-breaking discovery and evidence of the effectiveness of mindfulness practices.

Another recent and most impressive finding about practicing mindfulness is that it takes so little time to reap benefits! Dr. Stahl and his team of researchers found that achievement of benefits ACHIEVED through mindfulness practices is gained almost instantaneously and is gained through practicing mindfulness for only 10-15 minutes a day on a regular basis. 
The two studies presented here are just a sampling of the thousands of studies that can be found and that tout the benefits of making mindfulness a part of your everyday living.​

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE MATTER
1. Make it routine – Use your Mindfulness Matter at least once a day for 10-15 minutes​​

2. Use the information found on the iLiveAware website to give you best practice ideas (DON'T FORGET TO CREATE YOUR OWN!)


3. Keep a supply of Mindfulness Matter available and handy (SOME IDEAS: KEEP SOME BY YOUR BED, ON THE COFFEE TABLE, AND AT YOUR WORK DESK)


A Beginner's Guide 
To Mindfulness Matter Practices

First Breathe

1. Sit in a quiet, comfortable place​​​​

2. Remove your Mindfulness Matter from its packaging if you haven't already done so

3. Before you begin to work the Matter, look at it carefully; study it and become fully aware of it in your hand(s)

4. Split the matter in two and put one piece in each hand;

5. Focus on the weight of the matter in each hand, be attentive that it’s there. Try not to judge anything about it. Just realize it’s there and that’s all.

6. Now gather the Matter together

7. Start working the Matter with both hands until you can roll it into a ball. As you do this, focus on the matter. Pay attention to how it changes and how it feels 

8. with the ball in the center of your palms begin to move your hands in the opposite directions from one another like you would if you were warming them on a fire. 

9. Your matter will now become cylinder in shape and will get longer. Once the Matter as long as the width of your hands, grab the ends and pull until it is the same length as the space between your ears.

10. Bring the matter to your nose and take in the smell with a large, deep mindful breathe

11. Gather the matter rolling it back into a ball


12. Look at it; notice the color of your Matter and marvel at how it returned to this shape

13. Pull on the Matter with both of your hands and notice how the tension is different than it was before

14. Now roll the Matter back into a ball. 

15. WIth your index fingers shape the Matter into a square (try to make other shapes if you have time)

16. Focus fully on how easily you can manipulate the Matter into shapes


(repeat 2 x starting at #6)

17. Roll the Matter into a ball and place it back in the container so that it will be ready to go for next time!​
